Getting There
Fly into Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport (PLZ), 10 minutes from the city center. Direct flights from Johannesburg (1.5 hours) and Cape Town (1.5 hours) with FlySafair, Airlink, and Kulula. Car hire is essential — Addo Elephant Park is 75km north.

Port Elizabeth — officially renamed Gqeberha in 2021 (the Xhosa name for the Baakens River, though most South Africans still use PE for short) — is the Eastern Cape’s main city and the most practical base for Addo Elephant Park. The city has a reputation for wind (it is genuinely windier than most South African coastal cities), a working port, excellent surf breaks, and a warmth of character that visitors who expect a smaller Cape Town are pleasantly surprised by. It is not a destination in the way that Cape Town is a destination; it is the place from which Eastern Cape destinations begin.

The beaches are better than the city’s tourism marketing typically communicates. King’s Beach and Hobie Beach at the southern end of the Summerstrand beachfront are long, sheltered, and warm (the Indian Ocean water here is consistently warmer than Cape Town’s Atlantic). The surf break at Kings Beach produces consistent waves suitable for beginners; the beach area south toward Humewood has the city’s best restaurants and accommodation close enough to walk. The beachfront promenade from Kings Beach to Summerstrand is 5km of easy coastal walking with the ocean on one side and the city on the other.

The real attraction is thirty minutes north on the N2: Addo Elephant Park, home to more than 600 elephants and the Big Five. For anyone arriving in Port Elizabeth, a two-night Addo stay is the most compelling immediate plan — the city provides the airport connection, the hire car, the accommodation infrastructure, and then steps aside while the elephants provide the experience.

The Arrival

Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport is 10 minutes from the city center — one of the most convenient airport-to-city connections in South Africa. Collect your hire car at the airport and drive south to the Summerstrand beachfront, or north on the N2 directly to Addo.

Why Port Elizabeth belongs on your itinerary

Port Elizabeth is the logical anchor point for Eastern Cape exploration. Addo Elephant Park (75km north), the Garden Route (west on the N2), the Baviaanskloof Wilderness (2 hours northwest), and the surf breaks of Jeffrey’s Bay (75km west) are all accessible from a PE base. The city itself provides good airport connections from both Johannesburg and Cape Town, a range of decent accommodation, and car hire at competitive rates.

The Donkin Reserve and lighthouse on the hill above the city center gives the best overview of Mandela Bay — the working port to the north, the beachfront stretching south, and the Indian Ocean beyond. The pyramid monument at the Donkin Reserve was built by acting governor Sir Rufane Donkin in 1820 in memory of his wife Elizabeth, after whom the city is named. It is one of the more touching pieces of colonial memorial architecture in South Africa and the views from the hill justify the climb regardless of the history.

Jeffrey’s Bay, 75km west on the N2, is included in most PE visits — one of the world’s top ten surf breaks and a small beach town with a completely different energy from PE. The right-hand point break at Supertubes produces the longest, most perfect wave in South Africa and, on the right swell, one of the best in the world. The town’s craft beer bars and surf shops make it a pleasant overnight even for non-surfers.

What To Explore

Port Elizabeth activities divide between the city beachfront, day trips to Addo, and the broader Eastern Cape road network. The city itself rewards half a day; Addo deserves two nights minimum.

What should you do in Port Elizabeth?

Addo Elephant Park Day Trip or Stay — The park is 75km north on the N2 and R335 — 1 hour from PE Airport. A day trip gives 6-7 hours of game driving; two nights at Addo Rest Camp gives three full game drives and the proper elephant immersion experience. See the Addo guide for full detail.

Donkin Reserve and Heritage Trail — The hilltop reserve above the city center has the lighthouse, the pyramid monument to Elizabeth Donkin, and views over Mandela Bay. The Heritage Trail walking route from the reserve through the Victorian streetscape of Central PE takes 2-3 hours and is well-signposted. Free. Best in the morning before the wind picks up.

Hobie Beach and King’s Beach — The main city beaches are clean, warm, and ideal for swimming (18-22°C year-round). Hobie Beach has a consistent small-wave surf and regular beach volleyball. The 5km beachfront promenade from Kings Beach to Summerstrand is the city’s best free walking infrastructure.

Jeffrey’s Bay (75km west) — The world-famous right-hand point break at Supertubes is the primary attraction, but J-Bay works for non-surfers too — the main beach is swimmable, the craft beer scene is good, and the town’s relaxed energy is a pleasant contrast to PE. Drive the N2 west (1 hour); overnight is worth it if the swell is running.

Cape Recife Nature Reserve and Penguin Colony — The promontory south of Summerstrand has a small African penguin colony (free viewing from the viewing platform), coastal fynbos, and the Cape Recife lighthouse. Free entry during daylight hours. The 6km circular trail through the reserve is one of the better urban walks in the Eastern Cape.

✈️ Scott's Port Elizabeth Tips
  • Getting There: Fly PLZ from Johannesburg (1.5 hours) or Cape Town (1.5 hours). Frequent FlySafair, Airlink, and Kulula services make it South Africa's most connected regional airport outside the three main hubs. Collect car hire at the airport — essential for Addo and day trips.
  • Safety: The Summerstrand beachfront, Donkin Reserve area, and Humewood are all safe tourist zones. The CBD has some rough patches; stick to Heritage Trail routes and avoid it after dark. Use Uber within the city. Standard South African car security applies throughout.
  • Best Time: October through April for warm beaches and ideal conditions for Addo (though dry season May-October is better for game viewing). The Eastern Cape climate is milder than Cape Town — summers are less hot and winters are less cold. Wind is the main weather variable — the famous PE wind is most reliable in spring (September-November).
  • Money: PE is South Africa's most affordable coastal city. Beachfront guesthouse R800-1,800/night. Restaurant main R150-250. Addo park entry R232-492/day. Jeffrey's Bay surf lesson R350. Daily budget R500-900 (USD 28-50) covers everything comfortably.
  • Don't Miss: The Donkin Reserve at sunrise — the lighthouse, the pyramid, and the bay below with the morning light on the harbor makes for one of the better city viewpoints in South Africa, and at 6am you'll have it to yourself.
  • Local Tip: The Boardwalk Casino complex has the best waterfront restaurants in PE and a cinema complex — useful for an evening if the wind has made beach activity impractical. The Casino itself is functional rather than glamorous, but the restaurants (Hacklewood Hill, Ocean Basket) are reliable and the waterfront promenade has good sunset views.

The Food

Port Elizabeth has a solid mid-range restaurant scene built around fresh Eastern Cape seafood — snoek, yellowfin tuna, and red roman from the bay, and the excellent Knysna oysters available throughout the region.

Where should you eat in Port Elizabeth?

Where to Stay

Stay in the Summerstrand beachfront area for the best PE base — convenient for the airport, the beaches, and the N2 north to Addo. Humewood has slightly more character and the same beach access.

Where should you stay in Port Elizabeth?

Mid-Range (R800-2,000/night): Kelway Hotel in Humewood is the most characterful mid-range beachfront option. The Beach Hotel in Summerstrand is reliable and well-positioned for the Boardwalk and beach.

Luxury (R2,000-5,000/night): Hacklewood Hill Country House is the most beautiful hotel in PE — seven rooms in a Victorian house with garden. Radisson Blu at the Boardwalk offers modern luxury with the best views over Mandela Bay.

Before You Go

One night in PE, two nights at Addo, and one night back in PE before flying out is the most efficient Eastern Cape circuit. Add Jeffrey's Bay as an overnight for the surf experience between PE and the Garden Route.

When is the best time to visit Port Elizabeth?

Port Elizabeth has one of South Africa’s most equable climates — warm year-round (17-28°C) with no single season that is significantly uncomfortable. October through April is beach season — warm water, consistent swell at J-Bay, and ideal conditions for Hobie Beach. May through September (winter) has slightly cooler but still pleasant conditions and is the best season for Addo game viewing. The famous PE wind (a southwesterly) is most reliable in spring — check surf forecasts if Jeffrey’s Bay is a priority.

Pair with Addo Elephant Park for the complete Eastern Cape experience, or browse all South Africa destinations.
