Getting There
Fly to OR Tambo (JNB). Gautrain to Sandton ~R180.

The Apartheid Museum took me three and a half hours, which was not enough. The entry divides visitors randomly into two groups — “White” and “Non-White” — and sends them through separate entrances with documentation of what that distinction meant in law and practice for 46 years. The museum then walks you through the history of apartheid from its legislative foundations through the resistance movements, the international isolation, the declarations of states of emergency, the truth and reconciliation process, and the 1994 election — each section using documents, photographs, film footage, and objects with an archival thoroughness that makes the system’s logic and its consequences both comprehensible and unforgivable. It is one of the most effective museum experiences I have had anywhere, and Johannesburg is where it exists.

Johannesburg is the city that most visitors to South Africa hurry through. It is the international entry point — OR Tambo International Airport processes more passengers than any other in Africa — and most visitors spend a night here before flying to Cape Town or driving to Kruger. This is a reasonable approach to itinerary efficiency and a significant mistake in terms of what it misses. Johannesburg is a city of genuine complexity and interest — a 130-year-old mining boomtown that became the economic capital of southern Africa and the site of the century’s most significant political transition, and that is now navigating the post-apartheid urban transformation in ways that are simultaneously inspiring and difficult.

Soweto — South West Township, the vast residential area southwest of the city that was the home of most of the city’s Black population under apartheid — is one of the most significant sites in 20th-century history. The street corner where Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu lived within meters of each other (the only street in the world to produce two Nobel Peace Prize laureates), the Hector Pieterson Museum marking the starting point of the 1976 Soweto Uprising, the Vilakazi Street restaurants and shebeens — a guided Soweto tour is four to five hours of living history that no amount of reading adequately prepares you for.

The Arrival

OR Tambo International is the most efficient major airport in Africa — arrivals are straightforward, and the Gautrain from the airport to Sandton takes 15 minutes for R180, making it the fastest airport connection in South Africa. Uber from the Gautrain station reaches all Joburg accommodation.

Why Johannesburg belongs on your itinerary

Johannesburg is the argument for spending more than a transit night in a city that most visitors treat as a logistics hub. The Apartheid Museum alone earns two days in Joburg — it is that powerful and that significant, and it cannot be done properly in less than three hours. Combined with a Soweto tour, Constitution Hill, and a morning in Maboneng, Johannesburg adds a cultural and historical depth to a South Africa trip that neither Cape Town nor Kruger can provide.

The food and culture scene has improved dramatically over the last decade. Maboneng (Sotho for “place of light”) is an arts and creative precinct in inner-city Johannesburg that was largely derelict in the 1990s and is now one of the more interesting urban neighborhoods in the country — independent restaurants, galleries, the Arts on Main complex, and a Sunday market that draws the most creative demographics in Joburg. It coexists awkwardly with its surroundings (the neighboring blocks are not tourist territory), but within its boundaries it demonstrates what post-apartheid Joburg can look like when it’s working.

Johannesburg also matters as the gateway to Kruger. The Panorama Route — the N12 east through Mpumalanga, past Blyde River Canyon and God’s Window — is one of southern Africa’s most spectacular drives, and doing it between Joburg and Kruger turns a five-hour transit into a full day of extraordinary scenery.

What To Explore

Johannesburg's major sites are spread across the city — the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill are near central Joburg, Soweto is southwest, and Maboneng is in the inner east. Use Uber for all movements and book all Soweto tours in advance.

What should you do in Johannesburg?

Apartheid Museum — The world’s most comprehensive museum on the history of apartheid and South Africa’s democratic transition. Allow three to four hours minimum. R150/adult. The entry separation by racial category is not theatrical — it is a device to create immediate experiential understanding of what the system required. The photographic archive and documentary footage are devastating. Located near Gold Reef City; Uber from Sandton takes 25 minutes.

Soweto Township Tour — A guided tour (half day, R500-800/person, booked through numerous operators) covers the Hector Pieterson Museum (the 1976 Uprising), Vilakazi Street (Mandela and Tutu houses), the Regina Mundi church (bullet holes in the ceiling from the 1976 police response still visible), Orlando Stadium, and the Vilakazi Street shebeens for a local beer and food. Hire a guide with Soweto roots — the personal knowledge of the neighborhood’s history adds enormously to the experience.

Constitution Hill — The former apartheid-era prison that held both Gandhi and Mandela is now the home of South Africa’s Constitutional Court. The court building incorporates bricks from the demolished prison walls — a deliberate architectural statement. Guided tours take you through the old prison and the court’s art collection (which includes works by many of South Africa’s most significant artists). R60/adult.

Maboneng Precinct — The Arts on Main complex in the inner city (23 Fox Street and surroundings) has galleries, independent restaurants, design shops, and a Sunday street market. Safe within the precinct; Uber directly to the entrance. The 12 Decades Hotel in Maboneng is the area’s most interesting accommodation for those who want to be in the most dynamic part of Joburg.

Cradle of Humankind (50 km northwest) — The UNESCO World Heritage Site where some of the world’s oldest hominid fossils were found. The Maropeng Visitor Centre explains human evolution in a well-designed museum context. R190/adult. A half-day from Joburg.

✈️ Scott's Joburg Tips
  • Safety: Always hire an Uber — never walk alone in the CBD, never hail a minibus taxi or street taxi. Use your Uber inside Maboneng's specific streets, not the surrounding blocks. Sandton, Rosebank, Melrose Arch, and Parkhurst are all safe, well-lit, and well-patrolled neighborhoods for evening dining and walking. Soweto tours should always be with a registered guide. Car windows up at all traffic lights.
  • Getting Around: Uber works excellently in Joburg and is the only practical transport for tourists. The Gautrain connects the airport to Sandton (15 min, R180), Rosebank, and Park Station. Do not use the Gautrain's Park Station stop as a pedestrian hub — get an Uber from there immediately.
  • Best Time: March-May and September-October for the best weather — comfortable temperatures (18-26°C), clear skies, and low humidity. June-August is winter — cold nights (5°C) and cold mornings but clear sunny days. December-February brings afternoon thunderstorms that cool the city rapidly.
  • Money: Apartheid Museum R150. Constitution Hill R60. Soweto tour R500-800. Maropeng R190. Mid-range hotel in Sandton R1,200-2,500/night. Restaurant main R150-350. Daily budget R600-1,200 (USD 35-70). Joburg is South Africa's most affordable major city for accommodation.
  • Don't Miss: The Apartheid Museum — budget a minimum of three hours and don't schedule anything important immediately after. The museum's emotional weight requires some processing time. An afternoon coffee in Rosebank or Parkhurst after the visit is the correct recovery plan.
  • Local Tip: The Sunday Art Market at Arts on Main in Maboneng (10am-4pm) is the best single window into Joburg's creative scene — local designers, food vendors, live music, and a crowd that represents the most interesting demographic in the city. Safe within the complex; Uber directly to 264 Fox Street.

The Food

Johannesburg has South Africa's most diverse restaurant scene — Sandton and Rosebank for global cuisine at accessible prices, Parkhurst for neighborhood dining, and Vilakazi Street in Soweto for the most authentic township food experience.

Where should you eat in Johannesburg?

Where to Stay

Stay in Sandton, Rosebank, or Melrose Arch for the safest, most convenient Joburg base — all three have good restaurants within walking distance and easy Uber access to all major sites.

Where should you stay in Johannesburg?

Mid-Range (R1,000-2,500/night): The Protea Hotel by Marriott Johannesburg Balalaika in Sandton is well-positioned and consistent. The 54 on Bath in Rosebank is a boutique hotel in the best Joburg neighborhood for pedestrian access.

Luxury (R2,500-8,000/night): The Michelangelo at Sandton City is Joburg’s most classic luxury hotel. Melrose Arch Boutique Hotel offers contemporary design in a safe, walkable mixed-use precinct.

Before You Go

Two nights in Johannesburg covers the Apartheid Museum, Soweto, Constitution Hill, and a Maboneng evening. Three nights adds the Cradle of Humankind and the Panorama Route drive toward Kruger at a more relaxed pace.

When is the best time to visit Johannesburg?

March through May and September through October are the optimal seasons — comfortable temperatures, low humidity, clear skies. June through August is winter with cold nights (5-10°C) but dry, sunny days that are ideal for outdoor museums and open-air markets. December through February brings afternoon thunderstorms that clear the air — they rarely last more than an hour and the post-storm light is extraordinary. Johannesburg’s 1,700-meter altitude moderates the summer heat significantly; temperatures rarely exceed 35°C.

Pair with Kruger via the Panorama Route for the complete Joburg-Kruger experience, or browse all South Africa destinations.
