Getting There
Drive from Cape Town (~4 hrs to Mossel Bay) or fly to George (GRJ) and drive east.

The bungee jump from Bloukrans Bridge was, briefly, the worst decision I had made in recent memory. The bridge spans a gorge 216 meters above the Bloukrans River, and the world’s highest commercial bungee jump sends you off the underside of it in free fall. The jump itself takes approximately three seconds of falling before the cord stretches and the rebound begins. What I remember: the gorge walls on either side, the river impossibly far below, and then the absence of ground under my feet followed immediately by everything. It is the most precisely calibrated terror available for R1,500 in South Africa, and I would do it again.

The Garden Route runs 300 kilometers along South Africa’s southern coast from Mossel Bay in the west to Storms River in the east. The name is apt in a way that most tourist marketing names are not: the route passes through ancient yellowwood and stinkwood forests, fynbos-covered headlands, lagoons thick with wading birds, and a coastline of rocky coves and long sand beaches where the Indian Ocean delivers consistent swell to some of the best surf breaks in South Africa.

Tsitsikamma National Park is the emotional center of the Garden Route — the section where the ancient forest meets the dramatic Storms River Mouth, and the suspension bridge across the gorge at the river mouth gives a view of the Indian Ocean crashing between the forest-covered cliffs that is one of the most dramatic natural settings in South Africa. The hiking trails from Storms River Rest Camp range from a 30-minute loop to the five-day Otter Trail along the coast, which is one of the most popular multi-day hikes in the country and books out a year in advance.

The Arrival

Most Garden Route road trips begin at Cape Town International Airport with a hire car, heading east on the N2. The 4-hour drive to Mossel Bay or George is itself scenic — wine farms, the Overberg wheatfields, and then the first ocean views approaching the route. Alternatively, fly directly to George (GRJ) and drive east.

Why the Garden Route belongs on your itinerary

The Garden Route is the best self-drive road trip in South Africa and one of the better ones in the world. The combination of ocean and forest scenery, the accessibility of its major stops, and the range of activities available — from whale watching to world-record bungee jumping to multi-day forest hiking — makes it work for every type of traveler at every budget.

The practicalities favor it too. The N2 is an excellent tar road throughout, accommodation from backpacker hostels to luxury treetop lodges lines the route at regular intervals, and the Baz Bus hop-on hop-off service makes it possible without a car for those who prefer to let someone else drive. No single night needs to be spent more than 90 minutes from the next stop, which makes the route flexible and low-stress.

The forest is the element that surprises most visitors. The Knysna and Tsitsikamma forests are ancient indigenous forest — yellowwood and stinkwood trees that predate European settlement by millennia, inhabited by Knysna loeries, samango monkeys, and the remnant Knysna elephant population (three individuals, very rarely seen). Walking through it is completely different from any other forest experience in southern Africa.

What To Explore

The classic Garden Route stops from west to east: Mossel Bay, George (gateway), Wilderness, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, and Storms River/Tsitsikamma. Most visitors spend one to two nights at each major stop and continue east or loop back.

What should you do on the Garden Route?

Tsitsikamma National Park and Storms River Mouth — The suspension bridge above the Storms River Mouth is the Garden Route’s single most spectacular viewpoint — ancient forest on both sides, the river carving through a narrow gorge before meeting the Indian Ocean in a thunder of white water. The Mouth Trail (30-minute loop) is free with park entry (R252/adult). The Storms River Rest Camp is the best-positioned accommodation for an early-morning forest walk.

Bloukrans Bungee Jump — The world’s highest commercial bridge bungee jump at 216 meters. R1,500/person from Face Adrenalin. The gorge approach and the walk across the bridge above the jump point build up the experience effectively. Open daily; book ahead in peak season. The bridge walk (R150, no jump) lets you experience the height and the gorge without free fall.

Knysna Heads and Lagoon — The Knysna Heads — twin sandstone headlands guarding the lagoon entrance — are best seen from the water on a Knysna Heads cruise (R250/person, 1 hour). The freshly shucked Knysna oysters at the waterfront are mandatory. The Featherbed Nature Reserve on the Western Head is accessible only by ferry and 4x4 (R550/person, book ahead).

Plettenberg Bay Whale Watching — From June to November, southern right whales and humpbacks come close enough to shore in Plett Bay for excellent land-based viewing. Offshore whale watching boats (R900/person) get closer. The stretch of beach from Central Beach to Robberg Peninsula is one of the finest beach walks on the route.

Wilderness Section — The Wilderness National Park between George and Knysna has a system of lagoons, rivers, and lakes ideal for kayaking and birdwatching. Rent a canoe from the main camp (R100/hour) and paddle through the reed beds where African fish eagles call from the trees. The Wilderness beach itself is a long, uncrowded surf beach.

✈️ Scott's Garden Route Tips
  • Getting There: Fly to Cape Town International, collect a hire car, and drive east on the N2. Allow a minimum of 7 days for the full route from Mossel Bay to Storms River. Alternatively, fly George (GRJ) and do the eastern section only (Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Tsitsikamma) in 4-5 days.
  • Safety: The Garden Route is one of South Africa's safest tourist regions — a coastal corridor where crime statistics are significantly lower than Cape Town or Johannesburg. Standard precautions (locked car, nothing visible on seats) apply, but the towns and parks present no significant safety concerns. Drive in daylight — the N2 is excellent but night driving on rural South African roads always carries higher risk from livestock and potholes.
  • Best Time: October through March for warm beaches and all activities operating. June-November for whale watching at Plett and Hermanus. December-January is peak — book accommodation 3-6 months ahead. April-May is an excellent quiet season with comfortable temperatures.
  • Money: Budget R500-800/day backpacking (hostel dorm + Baz Bus + activities). Mid-range R1,000-1,800/day (guesthouse, hire car, restaurants, park entries). Major activity costs: Bloukrans bungee R1,500, Tsitsikamma park R252, Otter Trail booking R3,000+/person. Daily fuel cost for a hire car: R400-600 for the full route.
  • Don't Miss: The Storms River Mouth at dawn — arrive at the suspension bridge before 8am when the mist is still in the forest gorge and the sound of the river meeting the ocean is the only sound. It is one of the most beautiful places in South Africa at that hour.
  • Local Tip: The Otter Trail (five-day coastal hike from Storms River Mouth to Nature's Valley) is South Africa's most sought-after hiking permit — it books out within minutes when the annual booking window opens. If this is your priority, plan eighteen months ahead. The day walks in Tsitsikamma are beautiful alternatives without the booking complexity.

The Food

Knysna oysters, fresh line fish from local trawlers, forest mushrooms, and the bountiful produce of the Western Cape combine to make the Garden Route one of South Africa's most satisfying food regions.

Where to Stay

The Garden Route has more accommodation variety per kilometer than any other South African region — from backpacker hostels to treehouse lodges to private beach villas. Stay at least one night in Tsitsikamma inside the national park for the full forest experience.

Where should you stay on the Garden Route?

Storms River Rest Camp, Tsitsikamma (R1,200-2,500/night): The SANParks camp inside Tsitsikamma — chalets and camping at the forest’s edge with the Storms River Mouth a short walk away. The most atmospheric accommodation on the route.

Knysna (R1,000-3,500/night): Rex Hotel in the town center is reliable mid-range. The Turbine Hotel at the Knysna Waterfront is the most stylish option for the lagoon views.

Plettenberg Bay (R1,500-8,000/night): Emily Moon River Lodge is the Garden Route’s most romantic accommodation — treehouse-style chalets above the Bitou River with forest views. Hunter’s Country House offers classic luxury with gardens.

Before You Go

Seven days minimum for the full route from Mossel Bay to Storms River — five days gives you the highlights without lingering. Two weeks lets you stop properly at every point that interests you, add Addo Elephant Park at the eastern end, and return via the Overberg wine region.

When is the best time to visit the Garden Route?

October through March is summer — warm (22-28°C), excellent for beaches and all water activities. December-January is peak season: book accommodation months ahead, expect crowds at Tsitsikamma and Knysna, but the weather is perfect. April and May offer the best shoulder-season experience — warm, quieter, beautiful light on the lagoons and forest. June through August brings cooler temperatures (15-20°C) and some rain, but also whale season and the emptiest, most atmospheric version of the route.

Year-round: the N2 is always driveable, the forests are always beautiful, and Tsitsikamma is always worth the entry fee.

Pair with Knysna for a full stop, or browse all South Africa destinations.
